Ton - ton (English spelling)

A unit of mass in the metric and imperial systems. In the metric system, it is 1000 kilograms. It is represented by the symbol t. It is one of the non-SI units used in conjunction with the International System of Units (SI). In the imperial system, it is 2240 avoirdupois pounds and is also called a long ton (meaning a large ton), and in the United States it is 2000 pounds and is also called a short ton (meaning a small ton). The name comes from the Old English word tunne, which means a barrel of wine containing about 250 gallons. It began to be used for mass in the 15th century, and was legally adopted by Henry II in 1422 to measure coal from Newcastle.

There are two types of volume units: gross ton and cubic ton. Gross ton is the volume of a ship, with 100 cubic feet (approximately 2.83 cubic meters) being 1 ton. Volume ton is the volume of a ship, with 40 cubic feet (calculated as 1.133 cubic meters) being 1 ton.

Other units in the imperial system include different units for different items: in the UK, a ton is 40 bushels of timber, 16 cubic feet of stone, 42 bushels of salt, and 20 bushels of wheat.

メートル法およびヤード・ポンド法の質量の単位。メートル法の場合は1000キログラムをいう。記号はtで表す。国際単位系（SI）と併用される非SI単位の一つである。ヤード・ポンド法の場合、イギリスでは2240常用ポンドでロングトン（大きいトンの意）ともよび、アメリカでは2000ポンドでショートトン（小さいトンの意）ともよぶ。名称は約250ガロン入りの酒樽(さかだる)を意味する古代英語tunneに由来する。15世紀に質量にも用いられるようになり、1422年ヘンリー2世によってニューカッスルからの石炭の計量用として法定された。

　体積の単位のトンには総トンと容積トンがある。総トンは船舶の体積を表すもので、100立方フィート（約2.83立方メートル）を1トンとしていた。容積トンは船舶の積載量を体積で表すもので、40立方フィート（1.133立方メートルで算出）を1トンとする。

　ヤード・ポンド法にはこのほかに品目によって異なる単位がある。たとえばイギリスの場合、木材は40ブッシェル、石は16立方フィート、塩は42ブッシェル、小麦は20ブッシェルをそれぞれ1トンとしている。
