This picture scroll depicts the achievements of the Chinese monk Ganjin, who introduced Ritsu Buddhism to Japan and became the founder of Toshodaiji Temple during the Nara period. With the momentum of the revival of old Buddhism in Nara during the Kamakura period as a backdrop, it is known from colophons and inscriptions that in 1298 (Einin 6), Ninsho, the founder of Gokurakuji Temple in Kamakura, commissioned an artist named Rokurobei Renko to paint the scroll and donated it to the main temple, Toshodaiji Temple. The scroll is currently kept in Toshodaiji Temple as a five-volume collection. The contents are based on "Tang Daiwajo Tosei Den" compiled by Oumi Mifune in 779 (Hōki 10) at the end of the Nara period, and the illustrations were added to a Japanese-style legend with reference to "Ganjin Wajo San Iji" by Toyoan, a disciple of Ganjin's grandson.
