Paper money issued in the Edo period in exchange for silver coins. The shogunate's control was loose, and although some were issued by feudal domains, hatamoto vassals, temples and shrines, associations, and private individuals, they circulated mainly in the western part of Japan. The oldest was issued by an Osaka merchant around 1620 (Genwa 6) for the excavation of the Edo canal, but the oldest domain note was issued by the Fukui domain in 1661 (Kanbun 1).
