Japanese: ホウオウゴケ - ほうおうごけ

A general term for the moss genus Fissidens in the genus Fissidens of the family Fissideraceae. Approximately 900 species have been recorded worldwide, of which over 40 are found in Japan. Many species are particularly tiny, with plant bodies less than 1 cm in size. The stems are largely unbranched, and the leaves are arranged in two rows on the left and right sides of the stem, regularly lining up on a single plane. The name Fissidens comes from the neat, pinched shape of the plant body, which resembles the tail feathers of a phoenix. The base of the leaf is divided into two pieces like the leaves of an iris, and tightly pinches the stem. The capsule is cylindrical and either upright or inclined, with 16 teeth arranged in a row.
