Potter - Paulus Potter

Dutch painter and printmaker. He was baptized in Enkhuizen and buried in Amsterdam. He studied painting under his father, Pieter P. (c. 1597-1652). He excelled in depicting animals, and painted mainly small, bright, realistic landscapes with animals at the center of the picture effect. He was registered with the Delft painters' guild in 1646, but mainly produced works in Amsterdam, having been invited by the mayor of Amsterdam, who was his client. His representative work is "Young Bull" (The Hague Museum), and he also left behind several dozen powerful etchings.

オランダの画家、版画家。エンクハイゼンで洗礼式を受け、アムステルダムに埋葬された。父親Pieter P.（1597ころ―1652）について絵画を学ぶ。動物描写を得意とし、とくに動物を画面効果の中心に据えた、おもに小形式の明るく写実的な風景画を描いた。1646年デルフトの画家組合に登録されたが、顧客であったアムステルダム市長に招かれて主としてアムステルダムで制作した。代表作には『若い牡牛(おうし)』（ハーグ美術館）があり、また数十点のエッチングの力作を残している。
