A medieval royal monastery remains in the town of Lorsch in the southern part of Hesse, Germany. It is said that in 764, the lord, Count Cancor of Upper Rheingau, and his mother built a private monastery and entrusted it to Archbishop Chlodegang of Metz. The monastery began to attract pilgrims when Chlodegang received the remains of the martyr St. Nazarius from the Pope. In the second half of the 9th century, East Frankish King Louis II built a royal tomb on the east side of the cathedral, and his son Louis III built a crypt called the "Painted Cathedral" for its gorgeous murals and decorations. At that time, the monastery also had 600 manuscripts, including the "Lorsch Gospels." The particularly famous tower gate, also known as the "King's Gate," is unique in that the exterior wall on the front is decorated with decorative stonework in geometric patterns, making it a valuable relic of Carolingian architecture. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 1991. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
