A town in the Ardennes department in northeastern France, at the southeastern foot of the Ardennes Mountains. It is located on the right bank of the Meuse River, about 20 km southeast of Charleville-Mézières. It is part of the eastern industrial region, with woolen and steel industries. It is known as the site of battles in which the French army suffered decisive blows in both the Franco-Prussian War and World War II. The remains of a fortress from the 15th to 17th centuries still remain. Population: 22,407 (1990).
