After World War II, under the Japanese Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion and prohibits religious activities by the state and its agencies, only general instruction that does not amount to religious instruction was permitted under the same article, and all religious instruction was left to private religious practitioners. However, at the same time, satisfying the religious requests of inmates based on their own free choice is considered to be a guarantee of religious freedom and an obligation of the prison facility. …
