Various elements, including yttrium, were found in ytterbia, and in 1878 Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac of Switzerland discovered a new element, which he named ytterbium.

In 1843, Carl Gustav Mosander of Sweden succeeded in separating yttrium into its three components (yttria, terbia, and erbia), retaining the old name yttrium for the element derived from one of the elements, yttrium, and giving the names terbium and erbium to the elements derived from terbia and erbia, respectively.
