A daily newspaper in Tokyo from the Meiji to Showa periods. Founded by Kuroiwa Ruiko in November 1892. Based on the editorial policy of "Firstly, simple, secondly, clear, thirdly, delightful," it gained popularity among Edokko for its scandalous articles on high society, entertainment articles, and Ruiko's novels. From around 1900, it welcomed such commentators as Uchimura Kanzo, Kotoku Shusui, and Sakai Toshihiko, and became a newspaper with a strong progressive tone. However, before the Russo-Japanese War, Kuroiwa switched to a pro-war stance, and Uchimura, Kotoku, and others who were anti-war, left the company. It also lagged behind in establishing a reporting system, and gradually fell out of the mainstream of the newspaper world. Its popularity temporarily recovered during the Taisho period constitutional government protection movement, but it declined after Kuroiwa's death in 1920, and was absorbed into the Tokyo Mainichi Shimbun (founded in 1910, ceased publication in 1941) in September 1940. The term "page three news," used to describe social incidents, comes from the fact that these articles were published on page three of the four-page newspaper Yorozu Choho.Manchoho NewsPlease see the "Yotsuchoho" page.
