Yugoslav poet. Born in Slovenia, he studied law in Vienna and obtained his doctorate. He earned a living as a lawyer's clerk in Ljubljana while devoting himself to poetry. He published lyric poems, contemplative poems, patriotic poems, and folk poems, making full use of ancient and modern poetic forms, and is known as the Slovenian Pushkin. In "Wreath of Sonnets" (1834), he sublimated his love for a woman into love for his country, and in "A Toast in Memory of Andrej Smore" (1848), he elevated a lament for a friend into an ode to the people. ユーゴスラビアの詩人。スロベニアに生まれ，ウィーンで法律を学び，博士号を取得。リュブリャナで弁護士書記として生計をたてるかたわら詩作に励む。古今の詩形を駆使して抒情詩，思索詩，愛国詩，民衆詩を発表，スロベニアのプーシキンともいわれる。《ソネットの花環》(1834)では女性への愛を祖国愛へと昇華させ，《アンドレイ･スモーレを記念して乾杯》(1848)では友人への悲歌を民衆への頌歌にまで高めた。【田中一生】
