An Iranian dynasty (1750-94) centered in southern Iran. Its capital was Shiraz. It began when Karim Khan, leader of the Zand sect of the Lori people, seized control of Isfahan during the period of chaos following the death of Nadir Shah. During his reign, he gained territory stretching from Basra in the south to Azerbaijan in the north and Sistan in the east. However, he was unable to control Khorasan, and on the surface he remained a vassal of the Safavids. Under the rule of the Zand dynasty, the reconstruction of cities such as Shiraz and Isfahan was promoted, industry was developed, and ties with European companies were strengthened. In the field of Persian poetry, a literary revival took place, centered on the two aforementioned cities.
