Japanese: 国連大学 - こくれんだいがく(英語表記)United Nations University
United Nations University (English name) United Nations University

A research and training institute operated under the joint support of the United Nations and UNESCO. Abbreviated as UNU. It was proposed by Secretary-General U Thant at the United Nations General Assembly in 1969, and its establishment was approved at the General Assembly in 1972. The following year, the 12-article Charter of the United Nations University was adopted, and it was decided that the headquarters would be in Tokyo. In 1974, New York University President J.M. Hester was appointed as the first president. Since 1975, the university has operated from a temporary headquarters in Shibuya, Tokyo, but in July 1992, a permanent headquarters facility was completed and moved to Jingumae, Shibuya Ward. The university was established with the following aims: to promote an international research network, to foster a common understanding of important global issues, to encourage research and training activities in each country by organizing an international cooperation system, and to strengthen the research and training functions of developing countries. It is different in character from ordinary universities, in that the instructors are outstanding experts from each country involved in the UNU project, and the students are young researchers who receive training as fellows. Funding for activities comes from donations from governments, foundations, and individuals. The entire globe is the university's campus, and under the general supervision of the university headquarters in Tokyo, the university is working to solve global problems through collaboration and cooperation with UNU research and training centers and various programs around the world, as well as academic institutions and researchers from around the world. As of 2000, its representative projects are "Peace and Governance" and "Environment and Sustainable Development." The current (fourth) president is J. A. van Ginkel from the Netherlands. The research institutes directly under the UNU include the World Institute for Development Economics (Finland), the Institute for New Technologies (Netherlands), the International Software Technology Institute (Macau), the African Institute of Natural Resources (Ghana), and the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (Tokyo), and the role that the research results of these institutes play in international exchange is also attracting attention.
