A perennial plant of the lily family that grows on rocky areas in high mountains (illustration). It is widely distributed in the polar and subpolar regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In plant geography, it is an example of what is called the circumpolar element. The stem is 5-15 cm tall, with two alternate rows of linear leaves similar to those of a red lily, and a dense raceme at the top. The flowers usually bloom facing diagonally downward. The tepals are small and white or pale purple. The pistil consists of three carpels, the upper part of which is separate. This indicates a primitive stage in the evolution of the ovary, which is seen in many angiosperms. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
