Lightning

A connector standard developed by Apple Inc. It is used in the company's mobile devices. It is also called the Lightning connector. It is a specification that appeared as the successor to the Dock connector, and is used on iPhones, iPads, iPad minis, iPod nanos, and iPod touches released after September 2012.

The dock connector had 30 pins, but the Lightning connector has a terminal configuration of 8 pins plus the surrounding area for a total of 9 contacts. This has made it significantly smaller and stronger. It is also reversible, so it can be inserted in either direction. It is used for synchronizing and communicating with external devices, charging mobile devices, etc. Only digital data can be handled for data communication, and the standard is USB. The cable used to connect to external devices such as computers has a USB terminal on one side. Adapters are also available to convert to a dock connector. There are also cables to convert to HDMI, VGA (video graphics array), and microUSB.

アップル社が開発したコネクタの規格。同社の携帯端末で使われている。Lightningコネクタともいう。Dock(ドック)コネクタの後継として登場した仕様で、2012年9月以降に発売されたiPhone(アイフォーン)、iPad(アイパッド)、iPad mini(アイパッドミニ)、iPod nano(アイポッドナノ)、iPod touch(アイポッドタッチ)などで採用されている。

　Dockコネクタは30ピンであったが、Lightningは八つのピンにその周囲の部分を加えた九つの接点という端子構成になった。これにより大幅に小型化され、強度も高まった。また、表裏のないリバーシブル構造でどちらの向きでも挿入できる。外部機器とのデータの同期や通信、携帯端末の充電などで使用する。データ通信で扱えるのはデジタルデータのみで、規格はUSBに準拠している。パソコンなどの外部機器と接続するためのケーブルは、片側がUSB端子になっている。Dockコネクタに変換するためのアダプタも用意されている。その他、HDMI、VGA（video graphics array）、microUSBに変換するためのケーブルなどもある。
