Born November 17, 1885 in Higashiwaga, Iwate. Died May 1, 1927. Western-style painter from Chigasaki. Born as the eldest son of the Man family, a wholesaler of agricultural and marine products. In 1903, he moved to Tokyo and studied Western-style painting at the Hakuba-kai Second Western-style Painting Institute while attending Waseda Junior High School. Later, he dropped out of Waseda Senior High School and entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. In 1912, he showed Fauvist expression in his graduation work, "Nude Beauty" (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo). In the same year, he formed the Fusan-kai with Ryusei Kishida and Kotaro Takamura, and promoted the emerging art movement. His works gradually showed attempts at Cubism from Fauvism, and his paintings changed to dark, gloomy colors, but he exhibited ambitious masterpieces at the Inten Western-style Painting Club and the Nika-kai, and established his position as a pioneer of Japanese cubist painting. From around 1946, he also became interested in Japanese painting, studying Gyokudō Uragami, Taiga Ike, and others. In 1947, he participated in the founding of the Shunyo-kai, and was also recommended as a member of the Japan Watercolor Association. Major works include "Self-Portrait with Clouds" (1912, Ohara Museum of Art), "Nude with Parasol" (13, Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art), "Man Standing Leaning" (17, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), and "Man with Cheek in His Hand" (26, same museum).
