...The Gdansk Agreement, concluded with the striking workers, established a dual system of state and society, with the party's leading role on the one hand and the freedom of trade union activity on the other, and played a quasi-constitutional role for the next 15 months. The independent trade union Solidarity (NSZZ "Solidarność"), which was established on the basis of this agreement, quickly gained 9.5 million members (Chairman Lech Wałęsa, 1943-), and promoted the formation of farmers' unions, student unions, and other independent social organizations. On the other hand, the party, led by First Secretary Stanisław Kania (1927-), tried to reform its system by holding free elections within the party, but was unable to adapt to the new situation.
