Yasuharu Wakizaka

A military commander who played an active role during the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake. He distinguished himself as a naval commander during the Korean War. During the Edo period, he became the lord of Ozu Castle in Iyo (Ehime Prefecture) with a fief of over 50,000 koku. He was born in Wakisaka Village, Azai County, Omi Province (Odaniyo-no-cho, Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture). He first served Akechi Mitsuhide, and then Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1583 (Tensho 11), he was the first to spear the Shizugatake battle between Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie, and was known as one of the Seven Spears. After this, he was appointed to the rank of Junior Fifth Rank and Nakatsukasa no Sho, and after a stipend of 20,000 koku in Takatori, Yamato (Nara Prefecture), he was made lord of Sumoto Castle in Awaji with a fief of 30,000 koku. In 1590, he participated in Hideyoshi's siege of Odawara as a boat commander, and also fought bravely as a naval force in the two Korean Wars. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), he belonged to the Western Army, but joined the Eastern Army at the time of the decisive battle and was granted permission to keep his original territory. In 1609, he was transferred to Ozu, Iyo. In 1615 (Genwa 1), he retired from service and lived in seclusion in Kyoto, where he died.

豊臣(とよとみ)秀吉、徳川家康時代に活躍した武将。賤ヶ岳(しずがたけ)七本槍(しちほんやり)の一人。朝鮮の役に水軍の将として武功を表した。江戸時代に入り伊予(いよ)(愛媛県)大洲(おおず)5万余石の城主。近江(おうみ)国浅井(あざい)郡脇坂村(滋賀県長浜(ながはま)市小谷丁野町(おだにようのちょう))に生まれる。初め明智光秀(あけちみつひで)に属し、ついで豊臣秀吉に仕えた。1583年(天正11)秀吉と柴田勝家(しばたかついえ)とが戦った賤ヶ岳の戦いで七本槍と称される一番槍の功名をたてた。この後、従(じゅ)五位下、中務少輔(なかつかさのしょう)に叙任され、大和(やまと)(奈良県)高取2万石を経て知行(ちぎょう)3万石の淡路洲本(すもと)城主とされた。1590年秀吉の小田原攻めに船手の将として参戦し、朝鮮両度の役にも水軍として出動し奮戦した。1600年(慶長5)の関ヶ原の戦いでは西軍に属していたが、決戦のとき東軍に加わり、本領を安堵(あんど)された。1609年伊予大洲に転封。1615年(元和1)致仕し、京都に閑居し、同所で没した。
