Cache memory - Cache memory

A small memory (storage device) that is installed between the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and main memory (main storage device) in order to increase the processing speed of a computer. It has a smaller capacity than main memory, but operates at high speed. Generally, slow and inexpensive dynamic RAM is used for main memory, while fast and expensive static RAM is used for cache memory. The English word cache means "storage facility."

Because main memory operates slower than the CPU, when transferring data between the two, a waiting time called a wait occurs on the CPU side. This leads to a decrease in processing speed. To reduce this as much as possible, frequently accessed data is stored in cache memory, and the CPU accesses the cache memory first, reducing the number of times it needs to access main memory and increasing processing speed. Cache memory operates faster than main memory, and is connected close to the CPU (nowadays it is often built into the CPU chip), which allows for even shorter access times.

Most CPUs have two levels of cache memory, the primary cache memory and the secondary cache memory, which are referred to as L1 and L2 cache memories, respectively. Some CPUs also have tertiary cache memories.

コンピュータの処理速度をあげる目的で、CPU（中央処理装置）とメインメモリー（主記憶装置）の間に取り付けられる小型のメモリー（記憶装置）のこと。メインメモリーと比べて容量は小さいが、高速に作動する。一般にメインメモリーには、低速で安価なダイナミックRAM(ラム)が使われ、キャッシュメモリーには高速で高価なスタティックRAMが使われている。なお、英単語のキャッシュcacheとは「貯蔵庫」を意味している。

　メインメモリーの動作はCPUよりも遅いため、両者間でデータを転送するときに、CPU側でウエイトとよばれる待ち時間が生じる。これが、処理速度の低下につながる。それをできるだけ少なくするために、アクセス頻度の高いデータなどをキャッシュメモリーに保管しておいて、CPUがまずキャッシュメモリーにアクセスし、メインメモリーへのアクセスの回数を減らすことで処理速度をあげる。キャッシュメモリーはメインメモリーよりも高速に動作するとともに、CPUと近い位置で接続される（現在ではCPUチップに内蔵されることが多い）ためアクセス時間をより短縮することができる。

　多くのCPUには、CPUに近い順に一次、二次という二段階のキャッシュメモリーが搭載されており、それぞれL1、L2キャッシュメモリーと表記される。また、一部のCPUには三次キャッシュメモリーをもつものもある。
