The largest river on the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is 30 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 381 square kilometers. It originates in the mountains 500 to 600 meters above sea level near Suzuyama in Kagoshima City, which is the backbone of the peninsula, flows southwest, then changes direction to the west-northwest, and empties into the East China Sea at Fukiagehama. Tin ore has been found in Suzuyama in the upper reaches since the days of the Satsuma Domain, the Kawabe Basin in the middle reaches, and the riverbed in the narrow parts of the basin below is made of welded tuff, with numerous potholes formed. In recent years, construction of a water conveyance tunnel has been carried out to make up for the water supply shortage in Kagoshima City, and part of the drainage basin has been changed.
