The world's largest retail company, based in the United States. Headquartered in Chicago. It began in 1886 when R.W. Sears began selling watches by mail order, combining mail and catalogs. Later, the company partnered with watchmaker A.C. Roebuck and expanded its product lineup. In 1906, the company changed to its current name. During this time, in 1900, it surpassed its rival Montgomery Ward & Co. in sales. After Sears retired in 1909, under the leadership of J. Rosenwald, the company grew into a large corporation with operations across the United States, and in 1924, in addition to its previous mail order business based in rural areas, it opened new retail stores in cities and suburbs.

アメリカにある世界最大の小売企業。本社シカゴ。1886年R.W.シアーズが郵便とカタログを組み合わせて時計の通信販売を始めたのに端を発する。その後，時計工のA.C.ローバックと提携，取扱品目も広げた。1906年現社名に変更。この間1900年には売上高で先発の同業モンゴメリー･ウォード社を抜いた。09年シアーズ引退後はJ.ローゼンワルドの主導で全米にまたがる大企業に成長し，24年にはそれまでの農村を基盤とする通信販売に加え，新たに都市や都市郊外に小売店を展開した。
