A city in the northern part of Mie Prefecture, in the northern part of the Ise Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1897. The central city area facing Ise Bay became a government territory in the early modern period, and developed as a market town and a post town on the Tokaido road. The port was opened in 1899. It has long been known for its production of edible oil and Banko ware, but the modern textile industry has developed, and after World War II, the first petrochemical complex in the country was built on the site of the former naval fuel depot, making it the core of the Ise Bay industrial area. On the other hand, pollution, including air pollution such as "Yokkaichi asthma," has intensified. The pollution lawsuit ended in 1992 with the plaintiff's victory, but in the meantime, the International Environmental Technology Transfer Research Center was opened in 1990, making use of this experience, and aims to utilize technology and knowledge of pollution prevention and environmental measures internationally. Yokkaichi Port was designated a specific important port in 1952, and became one of Japan's leading import ports. It is also the most developed commercial area in the prefecture. It is served by the Kansai Main Line, Kintetsu Nagoya, Yunoyama, Uchino and Hachioji lines, Sangi Railway and the Tomei-Osaka Expressway. The mountainous area in the west is part of the Suzuka Quasi-National Park. In February 2005, Kusunoki Town in Mie County was incorporated. 206.44 ^km2 . Population: 307,766 (2010).

三重県北部，伊勢平野北部にある市。1897年市制。伊勢湾に臨む中心市街は近世以降天領となり，市場町，東海道の宿場町として発達，港は1899年開港場となった。古くから食用油，万古焼の産で知られるが，近代的な紡織工業が発達，第２次大戦後は旧海軍燃料廠跡に全国で最初の石油化学コンビナートが建設され伊勢湾工業地域の中核となった。反面，〈四日市ぜんそく〉など大気汚染を初めとする公害の激化をみた。公害訴訟は1992年原告の勝訴で終ったが，この間，この経験を生かして1990年国際環境技術移転研究センターが開設，公害防除と環境対策の技術，知識の国際的活用をめざしている。四日市港は1952年特定重要港湾に指定され，日本有数の輸入港となった。また商業地としても県下随一の発展をみている。関西本線，近鉄名古屋・湯の山・内部・八王子各線，三岐鉄道，東名阪自動車道が通じる。西部の山岳地は鈴鹿国定公園に属する。2005年２月三重郡楠町を編入。206.44km²。30万7766人（2010）。
