A beloved American song. It is also familiar in Japan as the verse of the song "A Tadpole is a Frog's Child." In the early days of the Civil War, the Union Army loved to sing "John Brown's Body," named after the abolitionist J. Brown. In 1861, poet J.W. Howe, who visited a Union Army camp near Washington, wrote the words to the melody of this song, which became "The Republic Hymn." It was published in the Atlantic Monthly the following year, and became a favorite song of the Union Army. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
