Class Echinoidea, Order Scutellaria, Family Cassipanidae. The shell is roughly disc-shaped, with a long diameter of 5 cm and a height of about 0.7 cm. The upper surface of the shell has five radiating flower-like bands, and in the center there are four genital pores (one at the rear of the body is missing). The tips of the flower bands are all closed. The anus opens at the rear end of the shell. The shell color is red or reddish brown when raw, but turns green when injured or immersed in fresh water. It is found on sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow seas from central Honshu to Kyushu.

棘皮動物門ウニ綱楯形目カシパン科。殻は長径 5cm，高さ 0.7cmほどのほぼ円盤状。殻上面に5放射した花紋状の歩帯をもち，その中心部に4個 (体の後方の1個が欠ける) の生殖孔がある。花紋の先端はいずれも閉じる。肛門は殻の後端に開く。殻色は，生時は赤ないし赤褐色であるが，傷をつけたり淡水につけると緑色に変る。本州中部から九州にかけて，浅海の砂泥底に分布する。
