King Gojong

Japanese: 高宗 - こうそう

The 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty (reigned 1863-1907). His name was Hee. He ascended to the throne at the age of 12 with his father Daewongun as regent. He began to rule personally in 1873, but real power was held by his wife, Queen Min, and her family. After the First Sino-Japanese War, Korea broke free from dependency on China, and in 1897 he called himself Emperor and created the Korean Empire, but after the Russo-Japanese War it became a Japanese protectorate. In 1907, he was forced by Japan to abdicate due to the Hague Secret Envoy Affair, and passed the throne to his son. After the Japan-Korea Annexation in 1910, he was called King Yi Tao of Deoksugung Palace. When he died, rumors circulated that he had been poisoned by Japan, and the March 1st Independence Movement broke out on the day of his funeral.

朝鮮の李朝第26代の王（在位1863年―1907年）。名は煕(き)。12歳で父大院君を摂政として即位。1873年親政を始めたが，実権は妃の閔妃(びんぴ)とその一族が握った。日清戦争後は清国への従属を脱し，1897年大韓帝国と号して皇帝を称したが，日露戦争後は日本の保護国となる。1907年ハーグ密使事件のため日本から退位を強制され，子に譲位。1910年日韓併合後は徳寿宮李太王と称された。死去に際し日本による毒殺説も流布し，葬儀の日に三・一独立運動が起こった。
