Tomogashima

An island in the Kitan Strait, northwest of Wakayama City. It belongs to Wakayama City. It consists of Okinoshima (1.4 square kilometers), Jinoshima (1.06 square kilometers), and an attached small island. The name comes from the fact that the two islands are lined up next to each other. In ancient songs, it is also called Tomoshima and Imoshima. Okinoshima is the summit of the submerged Izumi Mountains, and its highest point is 120 meters, standing tall above the sea, and there are remains of a Shugendo training ground. Until World War II, it was a fortified area. After the war, it was incorporated into the Setonaikai National Park, and there is a hiking trail that goes around the Kounosu Observatory and the lighthouse, and tourism is progressing. It takes about 20 minutes by regular ferry from Kada Port in Wakayama City to Okinoshima. There are inns on Okinoshima, but Jinoshima is uninhabited.

和歌山市北西部、紀淡海峡にある島。和歌山市に属す。沖ノ島（1.4平方キロメートル）、地ノ島(じのしま)（1.06平方キロメートル）と付属の小島からなる。名称は二島が並ぶことによる。古歌には伴島(ともがしま)、妹島(いもがしま)ともある。海没した和泉(いずみ)山脈の山頂にあたり、沖ノ島の最高点は120メートル、海上に屹立(きつりつ)し、修験道(しゅげんどう)の行場跡がある。第二次世界大戦までは要塞(ようさい)地帯であった。戦後は瀬戸内海国立公園に編入、コウノ巣展望台や灯台を巡るハイキングコースがあり、観光化が進んでいる。和歌山市加太(かだ)港から沖ノ島まで定期船で約20分。沖ノ島には旅館もあるが、地ノ島は無人島。
