A genus of the Gesneriaceae family found in Africa, Madagascar, and Asia, several species are cultivated in greenhouses for ornamental purposes. They are usually hairy and stemless. Streptocarpus wendlandii (Japanese name Ushinoshita) is an egg-shaped oblong leaf 90cm long and 60cm wide with a single reddish purple leaf on the underside, and produces several flower stalks with many blue-purple flowers. Streptocarpus rexii (Japanese name Himegirisou) has oblong leaves about 20cm long growing at the base and produces pale blue flowers. The many horticultural varieties that are cultivated primarily come from hybridization, and the flower colors vary widely, from red to pink to white, making it an important horticultural plant of the Gesneriaceae family along with Saintpaulia.
