Year of death: December 31, 1919 Year of birth: October 3, 1848 (October 29, 1848) A newspaper entrepreneur during the Meiji and Taisho periods. His pen name was Aritake. He was born in Sasayama Nishimachi, Tanba (Hyogo Prefecture) as the eldest son of Ueno Yasubei, a money changer who was a supplier to the Tanba Aoyama Domain, and his father Kaneko. His family fell into ruin in the peasant uprisings of 1869 (Meiji 2), and after his father's sudden death, he moved to Kobe around 1872 to work in the tea trade, and in 1875 became a steward to Miyoshi Shigeomi, commander of the Osaka Garrison. In 1880, he became senior clerk of Kawabe County, Hyogo Prefecture, and in the same year, he joined the Asahi Shimbun Company through an introduction from Hosomi Sada. The following year, he participated in management as a joint investor, and from then on, together with Murayama Ryuhei, developed both the Tokyo and Osaka Asahi Shimbun companies. In 1886, he merged the Tokyo and Osaka Asahi Shimbun companies to form the Asahi Shimbun Limited Partnership Company, and from then on he and Murayama took turns as president every year. In the so-called White Rainbow Incident of 1918, while he was recuperating from illness, he took over as president from Murayama and worked to resolve the situation, including meeting with Prime Minister Hara Takashi. In 1919, he retired from the board of directors when the Asahi Shimbun Company was incorporated as a joint-stock company. <References> Asahi Shimbun Company History Editorial Office, "Biography of Ueno Riichi"; Asahi Shimbun Centennial History Editorial Committee, "Asahi Shimbun Company History" Meiji Edition, Taisho/Showa Prewar Edition (Mitsuo Igawa) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
