A breed of dog. Height at the shoulder is 53-64cm. There are several varieties, including the Spanish Pointer, which originated in Spain, and the English Pointer and German Pointer, which were developed based on the Spanish Pointer in England and Germany. They have excellent sense of smell, speed, stamina, and intelligence, and are used as hunting dogs for land birds. They are named after the fact that they can use their sense of smell to find hiding birds, stop, and line up their nose, body, and tail to indicate the location of the prey.

イヌの品種。肩高53〜64cm。スペイン原産のスパニッシュ・ポインターとそれをもとにイギリスやドイツで改良されたイングリッシュ・ポインター，ジャーマン・ポインターをはじめ数種ある。嗅覚(きゅうかく)，速力，持久力，知力にすぐれ，陸鳥用の猟犬とされる。隠れている鳥を嗅覚によって捜し出し，立ち止まって鼻と体と尾を一直線にして獲物の所在（point）を知らせるためこの名がある。
