... The founder of the kingdom was Shibaji, whose father was Shahaji Bhonsle, a military commander of the Muslim Adil Shahi kingdom that ruled the Deccan region in the 17th century. He established his base in Pune and rallied the nobles and peasants of the Maharashtra region, defeating the neighboring Muslim forces with skillful guerilla tactics. He also dealt with the Mughal Empire's Aurangzeb on an equal footing, and in 1674 he became king (Catrapati) at the Raigarh Fort, laying the foundations for a great Hindu kingdom. Although the confrontation with the Mughals, who were trying to advance into the Deccan, continued, after Aurangzeb's death (1707), the power of the Maratha Empire was established in the Deccan. ...
