A river in southern Akita Prefecture. It is 61 km long and has a drainage area of 1,190 km2 . It originates on the north side of the Hinotodake mountain range, which straddles Yamagata Prefecture, and meanders around the northern foot of Mt. Chokai before flowing north and emptying into the Sea of Japan. During the Edo period, it was also called the Honjo River, and boat traffic was also seen on the river. The downstream area from Yuri Town (now Yurihonjo City) forms the Honjo Plain, a valley bottom plain, which is a prolific producer of Honjo rice, and the Honjo city center developed at the river mouth. 秋田県南部の川。長さ61km,流域面積1190km2。山形県にまたがる丁岳(ひのとだけ)山地の北側に発し,鳥海山北麓を蛇行(だこう)しながら北流,日本海に注ぐ。江戸時代には本庄川とも称し,舟運もみられた。由利町(現・由利本荘市)から下流は谷底平野の本荘平野を形成,本荘米の多産地をなし,河口に本荘市街が発達する。上流は木材の大産地。
