A river in southern Akita Prefecture. It is 61 km long and has a drainage area of 1,190 km2 . It originates on the north side of the Hinotodake mountain range, which straddles Yamagata Prefecture, and meanders around the northern foot of Mt. Chokai before flowing north and emptying into the Sea of Japan. During the Edo period, it was also called the Honjo River, and boat traffic was also seen on the river. The downstream area from Yuri Town (now Yurihonjo City) forms the Honjo Plain, a valley bottom plain, which is a prolific producer of Honjo rice, and the Honjo city center developed at the river mouth. The upstream area is a major producer of timber. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
