Africa-Madagascar-Mauritius Joint Organization

... President Tsiranana maintained relations with France even after independence. In 1961, the heads of state of 12 former French colonies gathered in Antananarivo, the capital, and founded the African Malagasy Union (later the African Malagasy-Mauritius Joint Organization) with the aim of mutual economic and social cooperation. He also maintained friendly relations with the Republic of South Africa.
