When the object to be plated and the counter electrode are immersed in an aqueous solution (plating bath) containing the salt of the plating metal, the object to be plated is connected to the negative pole of a DC power supply and the counter electrode is connected to the positive pole, and a current is passed through the object to be plated, a thin metal film is formed on the surface of the object to be plated. Plating using aqueous electrolysis in this way is called electroplating, or electroplating. As counter electrodes, soluble anodes made of the same metal as the plating metal, and insoluble anodes that use oxygen gas generation as the anodic reaction, are used. In the case of soluble anodes, the metal salt is replenished to the plating bath by dissolution from the anode, but in the case of insoluble anodes, the acid produced must be removed and the metal salt must be replenished.

めっき金属の塩を含む水溶液(めっき浴)中に被めっき物および対極を浸漬し，被めっき物を直流電源の負極，対極を正極に結線して電流を流すと被めっき物の表面に金属の薄い皮膜が形成される。このように水溶液電解によってめっきを行うことを電気めっきといい，電鍍（でんと）ともいう。対極としては，めっき金属と同一の金属を用いる可溶性陽極，および酸素ガス発生などを陽極反応とする不溶性陽極が用いられる。可溶性陽極の場合には陽極からの溶解によって金属塩がめっき浴に補給されるが，不溶性陽極の場合には生成する酸の除去と金属塩の補給を行わなければならない。
