Born: 1482. Weinsberg
Died November 23, 1531. Basel German humanist, church patrist, and leader of the Reformation in the city of Basel. German name Hüssgen. Studied at the University of Heidelberg. He was drawn to humanism, and in 1515 assisted Erasmus in publishing the original Greek text of the New Testament. In 1518 he became a preacher at Augsburg Cathedral. Around this time he sympathized with Luther, and briefly entered a monastery, but escaped and became involved in the Reformation movement. He eventually moved to Basel (1520), and due to his harmonious personality he rose to a leading position in the local Reformation movement. He served as a professor at the University of Basel and a priest at St. Martin's Church. In 1522 he became a friend of Zwingli and began to support him. He achieved the Reformation in Bern and Basel, and in 1527 he became a pastor at Basel Cathedral. In 1531 he was deeply shocked by the news of Zwingli's death in battle, and died the following month.
