During the reign of Emperor Yuryaku, a sacred spring was said to have gushed forth in Motosu County, Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture), and an imperial envoy visited the falls and asked the father and son about the origin of the name Yoro. The old man told them that the son had drunk the water and felt relieved, so he took it home and gave it to his parents to drink as a nourishment for their old age, and told them the location of the sacred spring. As the envoy was about to leave in joy, a mountain god appeared and danced in celebration of the peaceful world. [2] The era name of the Nara period, during the reign of Emperor Gensho. The era name was changed to the 17th day of the 1st month of the 3rd year of Reiki ( 717 ), and the next god of the 8th year of Yoro ( 724 ) became the 4th year of the Nihon Shoki. → Yoro Falls. [3] The name of the southwesternmost district of Gifu Prefecture. It is located in the basin of the Makita River. It was established in 1897 by merging Taki District and Kamiishizu District.

[1] 〘名〙① 老人をいたわり養うこと。老人を敬い大切にすること。また、老後を安楽に送ること。※西国立志編(1870‐71)〈中村正直訳〉六「養老の資として、存貯せる一千クラウン〈略〉を、その故郷の親家に遺し与たへ」 〔周礼‐地官・大司徒〕② 「ようろうしぼり(養老絞)」の略。※浮雲(1887‐89)〈二葉亭四迷〉一「小弁慶の糸織の袷衣(あはせ)と養老の浴衣(ゆかた)とを重ねた奴を素肌に着て」[2][一] 謡曲。脇能物。各流。世阿彌作。雄略天皇の御代、美濃国(岐阜県)本巣郡に霊水がわき出たというので、勅使がその養老の滝を訪れ、そこにやってきた親子に養老の名のいわれを尋ねる。老人は、息子がこの水を飲んだところ、疲れがとれたので家に持ち帰って父母にも飲ませ、老いの養いとしたといういわれを語り、霊水の所在を教える。勅使が喜んで帰ろうとすると山神が現われ、泰平の世を祝い舞を舞う。[二] 奈良時代、元正天皇の代の年号。霊亀三年(七一七)一一月一七日に改元、養老八年(七二四)二月四日に次の神亀となる。四年、「日本書紀」成る。→養老の滝。[三] 岐阜県の南西端の郡名。牧田川の流域にある。明治三〇年(一八九七)多芸(たき)郡と上石津郡が合併して成立。
