Art of the Yi Dynasty

Japanese: 李朝美術 - りちょうびじゅつ

During the Joseon Dynasty, Confucianism became the state religion, replacing Buddhism from the previous era. Its doctrine was centered on Neo-Confucianism, and it developed greatly as the basis of political ideology. As a result, a new class system and education based on Confucian ideals were introduced into Joseon society, which had a major impact on the general lifestyle. As a result, Buddhist art declined significantly, and a new Confucian character was added, which is a major characteristic of Joseon art.

Joseon paintings were produced under the long-lived Joseon Dynasty, which lasted for approximately 500 years from the end of the 14th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Except for the period from the beginning of the country to about a century and a half when surviving pieces are rare, there is a wide range and a huge number of surviving works.

李朝時代は，前代の仏教に代わって儒教が国教となった。教義の中心を朱子学に置き，政治理念の基本となって，儒教は大いに発展した。したがって，李朝社会に儒教的理念に基づく新しい身分制度や教育がもちこまれ，一般の生活様式にも大きな影響を及ぼした。その結果，仏教美術は著しく衰退し，新たに儒教的性格が加わったことが，李朝美術の大きな特色である。
