Prester John (Latin: Presbyter Johannes) is a legend that was widespread in medieval Europe, about a Christian named Prester John who established a kingdom in the East. The first appearance of this legend was in the 12th century Chronicle written by Otto of Freising, in which, based on a report from a Syrian bishop, this king, a Nestorian Christian with vast territories east of Persia and Armenia, marched westward to recapture the Holy Land of Jerusalem, capturing Ecbatana (Hamadan), but returning without achieving his goal.

プレスター･ジョンPrester John(ラテン語ではプレスビュテル･ヨハネスPresbyter Johannes)というキリスト教徒が，東方に王国を建てたという中世ヨーロッパに流布した伝説。12世紀にフライジングのオットーが著した年代記の1145年の条に，シリアのひとりの主教の報告に基づいて，ネストリウス派キリスト教徒でペルシア，アルメニア以東に大領土をもつこの王が，聖地エルサレム奪回のため西進し，エクバタナ(ハマダーン)を占領したが，目標を達することなく帰還したとあるのが，この伝説の初見である。
