S. Freud believed that sexual activity is also seen in infants, and termed this infantile sexuality. Although infantile sexuality is sexual, it is not genital, and its erogenous zones correspond to the organs that perform the instinctive activity of self-preservation. In other words, oral love, as typified by pacifiers, anal love, in which defecation is a pleasure, and the pleasure felt from washing the body or friction are commonly observed. Curiosity about sex increases between the ages of 3 and 5. Eventually, sexual desire for people other than oneself emerges, and initially, for both boys and girls, the object is the mother. Next, the object becomes the parent of the opposite sex, but this is eventually prohibited and repressed, entering a period of latency.

S.フロイトは幼児にも性欲の活動がみられると考え，これを幼児性欲と名づけた。幼児性欲は性的ではあるが，性器的ではなく，その性感帯は自己保存の本能的な活動をする器官と一致している。すなわち，おしゃぶりに代表される口愛，排便を快感とする肛門愛，身体の洗浄や摩擦で感じる快感などが日常的に観察される。3～5歳頃には性に関する好奇心が高まる。やがて自分以外の人間に対する性欲が芽生えるが，最初は男女いずれにとっても母親が対象になる。次いで異性の親が対象になるが，やがて禁止，抑圧されて，潜伏期に入る。
