[Action films as the starting point of Japanese films]
The original meaning of "action drama" was "living drama" (Heibonsha Dictionary), and it was a drama that was as lively and animated as a live fish, and depicted the active activities of humans. Therefore, in the broad sense, "action film" includes all genres of film, and at the same time, it can be said to represent the very origin of film itself, but in the narrow sense, it refers to films that focus on scenes of intense human action, such as fight scenes, and is a genre that is contrasted with comedies, tragedies, and melodramas.

　〈活劇〉とは本来，〈活きたる演劇の意〉(平凡社《大辞典》)で，まさに活魚のごとくぴちぴちと生きて動くドラマ，人間の活発な活動を活写したものであった。したがって，〈活劇映画〉は広義にはあらゆるジャンルの映画が含まれ，同時に映画の原点そのものを意味するといってもいいが，狭義には立回りのような人間の激しい動きの場面を中心にした映画をいい，喜劇，悲劇，メロドラマなどと対照されるジャンルとなっている。
