Shimokoshiki [village] - Shimokoshiki

Japanese: 下甑[村] - しもこしき

A village in Satsuma District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the central and southern part of Shimokoshikijima Island at the southern end of the Koshikijima Islands. Population 3,017 (1995). The central part of the long and narrow island is lined with mountains such as Odake (604m), the highest peak in the Koshikijima Islands, Aoshiodake (511m), and Kuchidake (488m), and the coastline is a rocky coast with steep cliffs, so there is very little flat land. The main settlement is Teuchi at the southern end, and regular ferries run to Nagahama on the east coast and Kushikino Port on the opposite shore. Fishing has been a thriving industry for a long time, and in recent years the fishing port, port facilities, and fishing boats have been modernized, and fishing grounds have been developed and young shellfish released into the sea.

鹿児島県薩摩郡の村。甑島列島南端の下甑島中･南部を占める。人口3017(1995)。細長い島の中央部は甑島列島の最高峰尾岳(604m)をはじめ，青潮岳(511m)，口岳(488m)などの山々が重なり，海岸線は急崖の岩石海岸のため，平地はきわめて少ない。中心集落は南端の手打で，東海岸の長浜とともに対岸の串木野港へ定期船が通じる。産業は古くから盛んな漁業が中心で，近年，漁港，港湾施設，漁船の近代化が進み，漁場造成，稚貝放流なども行われている。
