A fictional bird in Indian mythology. It is a transliteration of the Sanskrit garua. It can also be written as garuda, karura, or garuda. It is also a translation of the mythical bird suparnin (gold-winged bird, myoshi bird), which is considered to be the same as Garuda. It is said to be the king of birds, lives in a large tree under the four heavens, and is a ferocious, monster-like bird that eats dragons. In the Mahayana sutras, it is one of the eight heavenly dragons that protect Buddhism. In esoteric Buddhism, he is said to be an incarnation of Great Brahma, Mahajyāta, or Manjusri, and is located in the Outer Vajrayāda section of the Garbha Mandala.
