Japanese: ヒラタヤスデ - ひらたやすで

A general term for arthropods belonging to the order Platydesmidae, class Diplopoda (class Millipedes). Body length is 5-30 mm. The head is small and cone-shaped with short antennae. Adults have more than 40 body segments, and the dorsal plate is flat with two to three rows of tiny bumps. They lay eggs in the spring, and the male incubates a group of several dozen eggs. The newly hatched first-instar larvae have four pairs of legs, which distinguishes them from all other millipedes (which have three pairs). The number of body segments and legs increases with each molt (segmental metamorphosis), and they reach maturity after about five or six molts.

倍脚綱(ヤスデ綱)ヒラタヤスデ目ヒラタヤスデ科Platydesmidaeに属する節足動物の総称。体長5～30mm。頭は小さく，円錐状で触角は短い。胴節は成体では約40個以上あり，その背板は扁平で微小な瘤起（りゆうき）が2～3列ある。春に産卵し，数十個の卵をまとめて雄が抱卵する。孵化（ふか）したばかりの1齢幼虫は4対の歩肢をもつ点で，他のすべてのヤスデ(3対)と異なる。脱皮ごとに胴節，歩肢の数が増え(増節変態)，約5,6回の脱皮のあと成熟する。
