1889‐1972 An Indonesian communist. He first studied under Tjokroaminoto and was active in the Islamic League. Later he joined the East Indies Social Democratic Union (the precursor to the Indonesian Communist Party) and became a member of its Central Executive Committee. During the Communist Party armed uprising of 1926-27, he served as a liaison between the domestic leadership, which wanted to promote it, and Tan Malaka and the Comintern, which opposed it abroad. After the collapse of the Communist Party, he moved to the Soviet Union, where he studied at Lenin University and was involved in Comintern activities.
