Nishiki-koji Street

Japanese:
Nishiki-koji Street
The name of a street in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City. It runs east-west, one block north of Shijo-dori, the city's central street, from Shinkyogoku-dori in the east to Omiya-dori Nishiiri in the west. Nishiki Market is located between Shinkyogoku-dori and Takakura-dori, stretching for about 400 meters, and Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine is located on the east side of Shinkyogoku-dori at the eastern end of the street. Nishiki-koji-dori corresponds roughly to Nishiki-koji in Heian-kyo, and was originally called Gusoku-koji, but was renamed in 1054 (Tenki 2) (Shochu-reki). It also seems to have been called Kuso-koji, which is thought to be a pronunciation of Gusoku-koji, and the Uji Shui Monogatari contains a story that says that the name was changed from Shiso-koji to Nishiki-koji during the reign of Emperor Murakami.
