[1] [noun] ① The third of the elders who are revered as Genro (elder statesmen). [Nippo Jisho (1603-04)] [Riji (Book of Rites) - Rakuki (Language)] ② A general term for the division of old age into Joju (100 years old), Chuju (80 years old), and Geju (60 years old). One theory is that they were 100, 90, and 80 years old. Sanju. By extension, the elder retainers of each domain. ※Kabuki: Sakurahime Azuma Bunsho (1817), Act 2: “By order of the Three Elders , Matsui no Gengo is given the role of whipping a servant.”⑤ In the Todo , the first elder is the shokukengyo, followed by the second and third elders. They live in Kyoto and handle general affairs. [2] The title refers to three people who are highly revered in the tea ceremony. They refer to Murata Jukō (the founder of tea ceremony), Torii Insetsu (a disciple of Jukō and owner of famous tea utensils), and Takeno Jōō (the teacher of Sen no Rikyu).

[1] 〘名〙① 年長者で元老としての崇敬を受けている人の中の第三番目。〔日葡辞書（1603‐04）〕〔礼記‐楽記〕② 老年を上寿（一〇〇歳）・中寿（八〇歳）・下寿（六〇歳）に分けた総称。一説に一〇〇歳・九〇歳・八〇歳。三寿。〔春秋左伝‐昭公三年〕③ 地名、主家の名などを冠して、その中での三人の要人。三人の重臣。〔書言字考節用集（1717）〕④ 徳川幕府の行政を担当した三つの重職。また、その人。大老、老中、若年寄（小老）の総称。転じて、各藩の家老。※歌舞伎・桜姫東文章（1817）二幕「三老(さんラウ)よりの仰せにて、役に指(ささ)れし松井の源吾、家来ながらも鞭打つ役」⑤ 当道(とうどう)で、職検校を一老とし、これに次ぐ二老および三老を加えた総称。京都に住し、一般事務を扱う。[2] 茶道で尊崇を受ける三人の称。村田珠光（茶礼の祖）、鳥居引拙（珠光の門人で名器の所蔵者）、武野紹鴎（千利休の師）をさす。
