Kaisen Joki

Japanese: 快川紹喜 - かいせん・じょうき
Kaisen Joki
Year of death: April 3, 1582 (April 25, 1582)
Year of birth: Unknown. A Rinzai sect monk during the Warring States period. Born of the Toki clan in Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture). Succeeded the 27th abbot of Myoshinji Temple, Ninshu Soju. Became the abbot of Nansen-ji Temple and Sofuku-ji Temple in Mino Province, but left the country due to a dispute over the jurisdiction of Zen temples in the country caused by Dento-ji Temple in the same province. He went to Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture) and lived at Kokubun-ji Temple, but became the abbot of Erin-ji Temple after receiving the patronage of Takeda Shingen. Shingen's Buddhist name "Kizan" was given to him by Kaisen. In 1581, he received the title of Kokushi (master of the temple) of Daitsu Chikatsu from the Imperial Court. After Shingen's death, when Oda Nobunaga attacked Takeda Katsuyori, he shut himself up on top of the Sanmon Gate with a monk from the temple and was burned to death. His death poem at that time is famous: "Peaceful meditation does not necessarily require mountain waters. If you clear your mind, the fire will cool down of its own accord."
