Mexico's largest oil field, located off the coast of the Bay of Campeche. A general term for the group of oil fields consisting of the Acar, Nojo, Chac, and Kutu oil fields. Discovered by fishermen in 1976, it was developed by the national oil company Pemex and began production in 1979. In order to improve the crude oil recovery rate, enhanced oil recovery (→ tertiary oil recovery) was adopted in 2000, in which nitrogen is injected into the oil layer, and crude oil production reached 2.1 million barrels per day in 2003, but has since declined sharply, falling to 770,000 barrels per day in 2009.
