One of the three major hereditary mask-making families active from the end of the Muromachi period to the Edo period. They are often named after their hometown, Omi (Shiga Prefecture). The first Kazusa-no-suke Chikanobu, like the other two families (Echizen-ideme and Ono-ideme), spoke of his relationship with Sanko-bo, a monk at Heisen-ji Temple who was an expert in mask-making, and called himself his disciple. In recent years, masks bearing inscriptions of the first Chikanobu, the second Chikanobu, and the third Bitchu-no-jo, as recorded in the document "Kamenfu," have been discovered one after another, confirming the identities of these previously unknown individuals and revealing that they lived around Sakata Kita-gun, Omi Province (Nagahama City). The fourth head of the Kawachi Daijo clan, Ieshige, had risen to Edo by 1639 (Kan'ei 16) and, as the leading figure of his time, was known as "the best Kawachi in the world." Many works are said to be his, but few can be confirmed. After Ieshige's death, his disciple, Omiya Yamato Masamori, took over and called himself "the best Yamato in the world."
