An old city in northeastern Chiba Prefecture. Established as a city in 1954. Facing the Pacific Ocean, it stretches from the Kujukuri Plain to the Shimousa Plateau. The city center has developed since early modern times as a distribution center for Ichibacho and Yokaichiba cotton, and is served by the Sobu Main Line. Rice, vegetable, and plant cultivation are thriving. There is an industrial park that was developed in 1982, and factories producing electrical equipment and other products are located there. 千葉県北東部の旧市。1954年市制。太平洋に臨み,九十九里平野から下総(しもうさ)台地にわたる。中心市街は近世以来市場町,八日市場木綿の集散地として発達,総武本線が通じる。米作,野菜,植木栽培が盛ん。1982年造成された工業団地があり,電気機器などの工場が立地している。2006年1月,匝瑳郡野栄町と合併し市制,匝瑳市となる。80.75km2。3万2696人(2003)。
