This is one of the main documents of the Yogacara (Yuishiki) school of Indian Buddhism. According to the Tibetan translation, the Sanskrit name is Yogacāra-bhūmi (Son of the Stages of Yogacara). The Chinese translation (100 volumes in total) is said to have been written by Maitreya, while the Tibetan translation is said to have been written by Asanga, and it is believed to have had a complex process of creation. This book is divided into five parts: the Honjibun (Chinese translation, volumes 1-50), which explains the state, practice, and attainment of a yogi by dividing them into 17 stages, and the Shokechakubun (Chinese translation, volumes 51-80), which elucidates the gist of these stages, and it discusses in detail Alaya-vijnana, the theory of the three natures, and various other issues. It is a sort of encyclopedia of Mahayana Buddhism. In the section on the subject, the terms "Shomonji" and "Bodhisattvaji" seem to have been used separately, and Sanskrit versions of both exist. The "Bodhisattvaji Sutra" and "Bodhisattvaji Sutra" are variants of the same term. [Makio Takemura] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
